Geocaching @ the park

Geocaching is a fun outdoor activity that combines a treasure hunt with technology. Participants use GPS coordinates to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, and can trade items within them, leaving a log entry to mark their find. Geocaching can be a great way to explore your local park, discover new places, and enjoy the outdoors.

Here's how to get started with geocaching at a park:

  1. Download the Geocaching App: Download the official Geocaching app or use a GPS device.

    • Note: At the Lynn Sheaffer Dum Memorial Park you can use the hard copy paper log provided with the geocache if you chose not to download the app.

  2. Create a Free Account: Sign up for a free account on the Geocaching website (https://www.geocaching.com/) or through the app.

  3. Find a Geocache: Search for geocaches near you using the app's map feature. Look for geocaches specifically located in the park you plan to visit.

  4. Navigate to the Cache: Once you've selected a geocache, the app will guide you to its location using GPS coordinates.

  5. Find the Cache: Once you're at the location, carefully search for the hidden container. It may be hidden under a rock, inside a hollow tree, or disguised in another creative spot.

  6. Sign the Logbook: If you find the cache, open it up and sign the logbook to record your find.

  7. Trade Items (Optional): If you wish, you can trade items with what's inside the cache. Be sure to leave something of equal or greater value.

    • Note: At the Lynn Sheaffer Dum Memorial Park all are welcome to take a small prize/souvenir. You are not required to leave something of equal or greater value.

  8. Return the Cache: Carefully return the cache to its original hiding spot.

  9. Share Your Experience: Log your find in the app and share your experience with other geocachers.

Tips for enjoying geocaching:

  • Be respectful: Geocaching should be done responsibly and ethically. Avoid damaging the environment or property.

  • Be prepared: Wear appropriate clothing and footwear for the terrain and weather conditions.

  • Leave no trace: Pack out any trash you find and leave the area as you found it.

  • Have fun: Enjoy the thrill of the hunt and the discovery of new places.
